Extended Services

We partner with other agencies and organizations to provide services other than food. Our patrons not only have physical hunger requirements, their needs are countless. In an attempt to meet some of them, we offer:

Optical Services: The Anderson Eye Foundation Clinic comes to our site about once every six weeks. People who have no eye care insurance can have their vision needs checked.

Medical Clinic Services: Many people do not have medical insurance coverage. By the benevolent offerings of Healthy Futures, medical services are offered free for various medical conditions. If a client needs a prescription, they are referred to the CRIXP program. The program works with drug companies and gets free medicines and samples.

Legal Advice: Through a HUD grant received by Underground Railroad of Saginaw (a domestic violence shelter), our homeless clients are offered legal advice regarding housing, family issues, etc.

Miscellaneous Needs: Once a week for both the fall and winter semesters, a Saginaw Valley State University Nursing Class actually meets at the Soup Kitchen to talk to clients to attempt to ascertain more accurately their needs and problems. Students check blood pressures, blood glucose levels, talk with people who come in to eat their lunch and give flu vaccine when available. Each nursing group session picks a project for their semester. So far they have done Health Fairs, Diabetes informational sessions and given out warm clothing (coats, gloves, scarves, etc.).
